Mission
To provide support to students of color in the Biology department over their course of career at James Madison University, bridge the gap between students of color and faculty, and build a stronger community.
Vision
We envision an organization that provides peer mentoring and peer tutoring services to freshmen and transfer students, career and professional development support to pre-professional students, seminars and workshops that specifically address the challenges faced by biologists of color, and diversity and outreach activities that reinforce the historical presence of biology and science in the communities of people of color.
Goals
- Introduction to students resources available, faculty research opportunities, academic culture at JMU, and other co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities.
- Opportunities for prospective or interested students to shadow a BIOSOC member to classes, research labs, etc. to give them a first hand experience to see what the Madison experience is like as a biology student.
- Career exploration and academic plan advising in conjunction with Career and Academic Planning and Pre-Professional Health Advising offices.
- To hold meetings, events, workshops, seminars and much more that strengthen our community and showcase the success that can be had at JMU as a Biology Student of Color.
